Chagall is one of the most prolific artists of the 20th century, who has created an extraordinary printed oeuvre; his lithographs in colors fetch up to 65,000 euro on the international auction market
This lithograph in colors was created by the Russian-French artist Marc Chagall in 1963. This is the lithographic rendition, which was executed by Charles Sorlier after a cutout from a study for the image ‘The Revolution’ of 1937. It was created as a poster for the annual exhibition ‘Painter, Witnesses of their Time’ at Musée Galliera in Paris. Our print originates from the 150 prints edition on wove paper before the script and is signed by Chagall.
The lithograph in colors is signed in pencil lower right ‘Marc Chagall’ and numbered in pencil lower left ‘77/150’. The sheet is verso reversibly mounted on the upper edge under a mat in four points. The sheet is toned and mat stained. There are slight handling creases, in the lower right margin are heavier creases that are strengthened by an adhesive stripe from the back. The dimensions of the depiction are 54 x 47 cm and the sheet is 70.5 x 55.3 cm in size. The total dimensions, including the frame, are 86 x 76 cm.

Russian-French painter Marc Chagall is renowned for his biblical motifs. He used the same recurring symbols in his painted and printed works, in his mosaics and in the windows and stage-sets he designed. As one of the most important artists of the 20th Century the “painter poet” gave Expressionism a new character. After his first education at private art schools in Saint Petersburg he went to Paris in 1910 where he was involved in the avant-garde art scene. Apart from that, he was inspired by visits to the salons, exhibitions and museums of this exciting city. After the First World War which Chagall spent in Russia he went to Berlin and later returned to Paris. Even after he had immigrated to America in 1941 he returned to his “ville lumière” Paris in 1948. Throughout his lifetime Marc Chagall received numerous commissions and their preparation and execution took him around the world. During his lifetime already he was honored with various international exhibitions, retrospectives and art prizes.
