Chagall is regarded as one of the most important artists of the 20th century and is well-known for his extensive graphic oeuvre; single copies of the suite ‘Celui qui dit les Choses sans Rien dire’ fetch up to 8,600 euro at international auctions

This graphic is an original etching with aquatint printed in color by the Russian-French artist Marc Chagall. It depicts one of 25 illustrations from the artist’s book ‘Celui qui dit les Choses sans Rien dire’ with texts by the surrealist poet Louis Aragon. The figures and objects depicted in the scene suggest associations and render the work a strong symbolic character.

The work is signed with pencil lower right ‘Marc Chagall’ and numbered with pencil lower left ‘15/25’. The Japan paper is slightly toned and shows some scattered foxing. Besides, there are a few very light handling creases. The sheet is verso mounted at two points on a cardboard. The dimensions of the plate are 39.8 x 30 cm and the sheet measures 46.9 x 36.3 cm. The dimensions of the framed work are 53.6 x 43.1 cm.



Marc Chagall (1887-1985)

Russian-French painter Marc Chagall is renowned for his biblical motifs. He used the same recurring symbols in his painted and printed works, in his mosaics and in the windows and stage-sets he designed. As one of the most important artists of the 20th Century the “painter poet” gave Expressionism a new character. After his first education at private art schools in Saint Petersburg he went to Paris in 1910 where he was involved in the avant-garde art scene. Apart from that, he was inspired by visits to the salons, exhibitions and museums of this exciting city. After the First World War which Chagall spent in Russia he went to Berlin and later returned to Paris. Even after he had immigrated to America in 1941 he returned to his ‘Ville Lumière’ Paris in 1948. Throughout his lifetime Marc Chagall received numerous commissions and their preparation and execution took him around the world. During his lifetime already he was honored with various international exhibitions, retrospectives and art prizes. (cbo)
