Maps: Extraordinary Map of North & South America
1719, CARTE TRES CURIEUSE DE LA MER DU SUD CONTENANT DES REMARQUES NOUVELLES ET TRES UTILES NON SEULEMENT SUR LES PORTS ET ILES DE CETTE MER, MAIS AUSSY SUR LES PRINCIPAUX PAYS DE L'AMERIQUE TANT SEPTENTRIONALE QUE MERIDIONALE..., (Amsterdam, by Henri Abraham Chatelain), Choice Very Fine. Large-scale, full-color map, 33.5" x 58.25", on four sheets, of North and South America, laid down on board for presentation. One of the most elaborately engraved maps ever published that includes North America (Schwartz and Ehrenberg, p.146 & 147, plate 85). Tooley describes it on page 130 as "One of the most decorative maps of North America of the 18th century, with numerous vignettes within rococco framework, beavers, cod fishery, customs of the Canadians & Mexicans, animals, sugarmill, turtle fishing, town plans, portraits etc." Also, a large vignette of Niagara Falls. Toward the bottom, the peoples of Central and South America are represented, complete with sugar, watermelons, bananas, human sacrifices, etc. This map was published in Chatelain's "Atlas Historique", (7 vols., Amsterdam, 1705-20). It is partly based on de Fer's map of 1700. California is portrayed as an island, with a note that says, "The Californias or Carolines that some moderns believe is attached to the continent of America by its northern part." There are many historical notes and small portraits of explorers, with their routes depicted. Some of the missions in Southern California are shown: S. Jacques, S. Innocents, S. Etienne, S. Leon, Bonnenuit, S. Juan, S. Bruno and Gigante. There is a light tear to the upper outer edge, expert repairs to central fold, and some light soiling. These maps sell in the $15,000 range, and this is one of the finer examples that we have seen. It is truly a work of art.
