Mapping the Transmississippi West: 1540-1861 Five volumes bound in six, by Carl I. Wheat (San Francisco: Institute of Historical Cartography, 1957-1963), limited first edition (No. 1 of 1000 sets), two-color cloth with gilt-lettered spines, folio (10.5" x 14.5"), original brown paper dust jackets still present, as new condition. Wheat, in this massive and monumental bibliocartographic reference work, traces the opening of the American West by examining each important map, whether manuscript or printed, from the early Spanish explorations through the U.S. Government surveys of the 1870s. This is the definitive reference in the field. More than 1300 maps are described in detail noting their importance and their historical context. Over 300 of these are beautifully illustrated - many of which are foldouts, some in color. Nearly fifty years after first publication, Wheat's scholarship remains without rival. These elegantly printed and bound volumes will make a wonderful addition to any reference library. Courtesy of P.
