This is an excellent, highly detailed and colored original antique map of the modern world by Thomas Kitchen. Both hemispheres are shown in dramatic vivid color and are flanked by an ornate cartouche and a drawing of books and cartographic tools. This is a highly prized and valuable map as maps of the world are rare and greatly coveted by collectors.

Thomas Kitchin (1718 - 1784)
Kitchin worked as a publisher and engraver from premises at The Star in Holborn, London. He was an engraver of the highest ability and produced a broad range of books on a variety of subjects as including topographical works. By himself, Kitchen produced a large number of maps of every kind for periodicals such as the London Magazine and for books on history and antiquities. He is probably best known though, for his partnership with Emanuel Bowen with whom he published, in 1755, 'The Large English Atlas' which contained the finest county maps of the 18th.Century. Kitchin held the appointment of Hydrographer to the King and engraved the maps of the British and French dominions in North America by John Mitchell (1755), which was used at the peace coucil at the end of the revolutionary war. In his later years he worked with his son (hence senior after his name in the c.1755 edition of the Small English Atlas).
