Manuscripts An Important 1861 Civil War Let
COLLECTIBLES Manuscripts An Important 1861 Civil War Letter to one Sarah Hobart and dispatched from Philadelphia on April 23. The letter contains an individuals' first thoughts at the start of the War including becoming a soldier and that there will be little fighting, if any (so much for that prognostication). The letter goes on to say that the South mistakenly thought "Northern Democrats and Republicans would be fighting at home.... But they are now sensible of this delusion." The letter goes to describe the advantages the North has in the coming conflict and the writer notes that "...the contest must be very unequal." He believes the South will never attack (so much for that) but he is clairvoyant in that he believes if the war is not terminated quickly by "peaceful measures", the South will be laid to waste and ruin. He discusses the "folly" of such a "Civil War". There is more of the politics as well as personal information. Excellent quality. Estimate US$100-150
