COLLECTIBLES Manuscripts 1863-4, North Atlantic Blockading Squadron Correspondence consisting of two letters from the U.S. Steamer "Aries". The first letter, four pages long, is dated December 6, 1863 and describes the capture and plunder of the blockade runner "Ceres". Later in the letter "...We kept on down the coast and some Rebel cavalry drew up on the beach, we threw a few shells in among them, which made them skedaddle into the woods." There is also a detailed discussion on the ship's weaponry.<BR><BR>The second letter, three pages long, is dated January 24, 1964 and includes the original mailing envelope on which the ship's name is in manuscript and franked by a Scott 65 and posted in Beaufort, North Carolina. The writer exclaims that this is "...A bulley old boat...She is the crack boat in the screwline on the Blockade...We run a blockade runner ashore opposite Georgetown, SC whereby we lost nine men taken prisoners by Rebel cavalry, the boat swamped . . ." The writer goes on to give a list of their conquests including the "Antinica", "Dave", "Ranger" and "Ceres". <BR><BR>Fascinating reading as well as being of great historical importance.
