by Wm. C. Coghlan, Civil Engineer and Architect, Offices 69 W. Jefferson St. Louisville, Ky. 1875. Framed and glazed, 30 x 33" overall, 27 x 30" (sight)with hand-colored details of the Louisville and Jeffersonville (IN) riverfronts, including islands and rock banks exposed at low water, and the Louisville and Portland Canal, completed in 1830 to allow shipping to navigate through the Falls of the Ohio. With "Comparison of Steam and Water Power Costs" in upper left to run 3,520,000 spindles, 7,700 looms and necessary machinery, although the steam power section apparently was lettered in different ink and has faded. Other details include section views of various races for discharging water. Framed together with Coghlan business card in the lower left.

Louisville had the largest textile industry west of the Appalachians in the 19th century, and was a major cotton market. Before the Civil War, she also had one of the largest slave markets, so her trading routes had long run south. While detailed in scope, this plan was never adopted. A fine Louisville map.

Condition: Moderate toning. Not removed from frame for examination.
