Drawn by artist W.H. Childs and first appearing in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper on 24 January 1863, this lithograph depicts the mass execution of 38 Dakota Indians by the United States Army. This was and still is the largest execution ever carried out in U.S. History and was originally intended to include over 300 Indians, but because of pardons handed down by President Lincoln, was pared down considerably. The executions were the result of several raids carried out by the Dakotas after the U.S. Government failed to honor one of many treaties that would provide the tribes with food, supplies, and monetary compensation for lands annexed by the United States in the early 1860s.The delay of compensation to the Indians was attributed to the United States' preoccupation with the Civil War. The print is in very good condition, with some fold creasing. The colors are very bright and the piece is mounted to a poster board very suitable for framing. -58846
