Manitou,CO - El Paso County - c1885 - Vista of Soda Springs Photograph :
This is a pleasant view of an idyllic town. Cabinet card photograph measures 7 1/4”x4 1/4”, green single matte with gold pin stripe 8”x5”, high to medium contrast—tends toward the whites and slightly faded on the upper portion, and the focus is sharp. One can clearly read the sign, MANITOU SODA SPRINGS. Photographer identified as William H. Jackson, one of the most prolific photographers of the West. Jackson was active in Colorado throughout the 1880s and early 90s. He maintained a studio in Denver for much of that time. In this photo one can see three people standing by the bridge on the left of the photo. They appear to be posing. The houses in the background speak to the resort style of the town. Manitou is located west of Colorado Springs and grew in conjunction with the city. Hafen mentions that in 1872, “a hotel was built at the mineral springs in Manitou, and a village was begun there.” (Colorado and Its People, 327) Situated at the base of Pikes Peak, Manitou offered a staging point to scale the peak and grew as a resort area along with its big brother to the east. No. 401.
