Signed book: Atomic Energy For Military Purposes. First edition, first printing. New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1945. Hardcover with dustjacket, 5.75 x 8, 264 pages. Signed on the reverse of the first free page by 17 contributing members of the Berkeley Lab of the Manhattan Project, and signed by one more on the half-title page. Signers include: Frank Oppenheimer, Ernest W. Lawrence (Director of the Berkeley Lab and Nobel Prize recipient in 1939), Edwin McMillan (Group Leader and Nobel Prize recipient in 1951), W. D. Douglas, Lex Barton, W. B. Reymolds, James Morton, William Parkins, Ted Finkelstein, K. McKenzie, and Wilson Powell. Taped to the inside front cover is a small facsimile certificate presented by the War Department and reads: “Manhattan District, This Certificate is awarded to University of California for valuable services rendered to the Nation on work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb, thereby contributing materially to the successful conclusion of World War II.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of toning to signed page, some scattered mild toning to some other pages, and aforementioned certificate. Dustjacket shows some mild toning and soiling, as well as a bit of scattered light paper loss along top edge of spine.
