Manhattan,NV - Nye County - 1906 - Vista of a Booming Mining Town Photograph :
Early mining town transitions from a tent town to wooden structures. Photograph measures 8 ½”x6 ½”, black single matte 12”x10”, high to medium contrast—tends toward the grays, and focus is sharp. Great photo of an early Manhattan. Photographer not identified. This mining town was located 42 miles north of Tonopah skirting the Toquima range alongside Big Smoky Valley. Manhattan Gulch, the valley shown in this photo, first showed promise in the 1860s when silver was discovered, but the area was not developed until 1906. In 1905, John Humphrey made a promising discovery and the prospectors flocked to the gulch. This photograph shows a bustling town of close to 4000 inhabitants. A combination of tents and wood structures fill the gulch and the Toiyabe Range stands strong in the distance. Hundreds of people can be seen on the main street of the town. Manhattan lost its financial backing after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, but the town managed to survive into 1909 when it again began to prosper. Included in this lot is a promotional letter from R.D. Robinson and sent to H. F. Heitmann--the Georgian investor.
