Manhattan, Nevada was known as the "the Town of Beginnings." Perhaps it was meant to encompass the possible new beginnings that the land's rich ore could offer a lucky prospector. Or perhaps it meant the two times the town and mining district was reborn, according to the book "History of Nevada" by Myron Angel. Ore was first discovered in the area in 1866 by George Nicholl. The following year the Manhattan Mining District was born. Like earlier mining districts, Manhattan's was no different. People traveled in droves to the area in the hopes of striking it rich. By 1867, over 50 mining claims had been made in the area. But in only three short years, production slowed and only a few souls remained in the area. Those who stayed desperately tried to fund their actives, but it wasn't until 1905 that a second boom would lead to a short rebirth. This stock was no. 9 and issued to Charles A. Lee on July 27, 1899 for 50 shares 1899. It was incorporated on June 7, 1899. 2c internal revenue stamp on the upper left side. The stock was signed by George E. Baugle, Secretary and C.E. Wegard, President. The printer is H.S. Crocker Co. San Francisco. The stock has some wear including tears on the sides and creases. There is a tear on the top center of the stock. A piece of tape has been placed on the back of the stock because of this. The stock measures 12.5" x 9.60."City: ManhattanCounty: NyeState: NVDate: 1899
