Manhattan Arms Gold Washed Second Model 22 Caliber Pocket Revolver with an Original Box
This Second Model was manufactured circa 1861 to 1862 and circa 1868 to 1873 with a total production of only about 8,000. The Second Model is distinguished by the flat brass frame with a large oval side plate, it has a longer cylinder (15/16") thus allowing 22 long cartridges and the stop slots are on the front of the cylinder and the stop on the bottom of the frame. The barrel flat sides have the standard scroll engraving and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Indian and settler motif, along with an engraved floral band. Octagon barrel with a solid rib marked "MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS MF'G. CO NEW YORK" and the bottom flat has the patent date. The engraving and markings have been gold filled. The matching serial number is marked on the rear of the barrel lug and on the right side of the frame under the grip. The barrel, cylinder are blue except where gold filled, the ejector rod, trigger and hammer casehardened and the frame silver plated. Fitted with smooth varnished grips. Complete with an original two piece box with picture label on the lid which reads "SEVEN SHOT PISTOL / made by / THE MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS / MANUFACTURING COMPANY / NEW YORK".

Fine. The barrel retains 40% of the original bright blue finish, mostly in the protected areas. The trigger and ejection rod have a smooth silver gray patina while the hammer retains 60% original dull case colors. The frame retains approximately 97% original silver with flaking on the butt, around the frame plate and screw, in the trigger area and scattered blistering, some of which has flaked. The butt also shows some darkening with age. The grips are excellent with exception of a small chip on the left toe and minor lower edge wear. The action needs work, the hammer does not cock. The markings and engraving remain crisp and clear. The box is very fine with some moderate corner and edge wear, a small hole in the side caused by the hammer and a few mild stains on the inside. A nice Second Model Manhattan Arms 22 caliber Pocket Revolver with a very rarely seen original box.
