This is an original exceptionally painted Buffalo hide from renowned Mandan-Hidatsa Native American Indian, Dennis R. Fox II. The piece shows a wonderful pinwheel painted design with quill work (quillwork) blanket strip and medallion like painted accents and Buffalo skull effigy's. The piece is signed, "Dennis R Fox II '55". Dennis Fox II, of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota Indian name is Ma-shu-ga Nix-bitsi (Dog Bear), is one of the most well known hide painters. He worked for the Smithsonian Institution's Folklife Program in Washington, D.C. specializing in painted hides. The piece is in good condition (some sewn patches in the hide). The fur side of the hide is also in good condition with only a few small areas showing fur loss. Measures overall 105"x83".
