Manam Island Antique Ladle w/ Faces Early 20th C.
This is a ladle from Manam Island, off the coast of Papua New Guinea. It dates from the early 20th century. It is hand carved wood, measuring 21 inches long, with 4 x 5 inch bowl. The most intriguing feature here is the handle, decorated with ancestral faces. The handle is tied to the bowl through four holes, secured with a cross pattern on back. There is a 1 1/2 inch crack on the side of the bowl. The rest of the ladle is in very good condition, with nicely formed carvings.
It comes with a metal stand, which has some light wear on the base.
A purchase invoice from Michael Hanson Oceanic Art is included, with 2007 value of $1,200.
This is a fine relic from the coast of northern Papua New Guinea.
