The present painting is the work of an artist, presumably active in the Netherlands in the first half of the 19th century, who was clearly influenced by the marine painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek. It depicts a rowing boat in the center, staffed with twelve men and a woman who have come to the rescue of a shipwrecked man. While one of them is pulling the man out of the water, the others are already looking for other victims. The artist executed the figures with the greatest care and rendered them a quite realistic character.



The painting is in good condition considering its age. The varnished canvas is laid down on a panel. There are tiny marks, where the frame has rubbed. A number of retouchings can be found in the areas of the sky as well as some further scattered in the lower parts of the painting. The work is monogrammed and dated on the left kerb of the boat ‘JHK 35’ (barely legible). A label is fixed to the reverse, reading some information about the Dutch marine painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek. The wooden frame painted in gold shows only slight traces of wear. It measures 37 x 42 cm und. The panel measures 23 x 28 cm. (cbo)
