This stunning lithograph measuring 26.25" x 20.5", was engraved by G.K. Stillman and printed by the Times Steam Job Color Press of Cincinnati, OH. The picture represents a view of one of the groves of the famous Sequoia Gigantea (Redwoods) surrounding a cabin. These trees are unique in that they only grow on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, and then only in groves. They can live for thousands of years. The North Grove of Calaveras was "discovered" in 1852 by Augustus T. Dowd. Each large tree is named and given a letter designation beneath its image. Trees represented include: "The Father of the Forest," "Mother of the Forest," "The Three Graces," " The Big Tree," "The Miner`s Cabin," "Uncle Tom`s Cabin," " The Horseback Ride," and "The Two Guardsmen or Sentinels." Each tree features a short description including its circumference and height. People are shown to give the trees perspective. This particular print was "Presented to the Subscribers of the Cincinnati Weekly Times" as indicated below the caption. Overall framed size is 23 x 29." One prominent foxing spot at right center. -59902
