Male Figure Seated Cross-legged with Folded Arms
Maya
A.D. 550 - 900
Ceramic, traces of paint
Height 7 1/4 in. Width 4 1/8 in.

Seated cross-legged, this figure wears a now-incomplete large belt with rear-projecting jaguar head, which may originally have been a form of ballgame accoutrement. Beneath a bead necklace and atop the folded arms rests a broadly rendered horizontal celt-form pendant from which hangs a trefoil element. A bead flanked by loops bands each upper arm. The loincloth is non-symmetrically rendered, with the fringed frontal flap lying over the left thigh. At the rear, a tail-like element extends from beneath the jaguar head along the left buttock. Although damaged, the central element of the lower headdress band formed a five-point cosmological emblem. Behind this, an arched backing is bordered by beads, with a larger central one at top, and flattened tufts of feathers project outward above each of the wearer's ears. In addition to general surface abrasion, especially in the head and headdress area, small losses occur from headdress and kilt, with larger missing portions of the man's right foot, and a missing right ear of the jaguar head. Some traces of original paint remain.

Provenance
Skinner, Boston: sale 2209, 20 September 2003, Lot 56, pp.18-19
