(Walt Disney Studios, 1940) Original concept drawing by J. Rinaldi featuring a male faun from Fantasia’s Pastoral Symphony segment, showing a from-behind view of the perplexed beast looking through his legs with several question marks. Reverse bears a stamp in the lower right corner, listing the title as “Concert Feature,” sequence number as “4C,” and the artist as “J. Rinaldi.” Accomplished in graphite and colored pencil on untrimmed 12 x 10 animation paper. Total image measures 7.75 x 5.75. In fine condition, with a missing lower right corner tip. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Basmajian Collection. During development and early production stages, Disney’s third theatrical animated film was initially referred to as The Concert Feature or the Musical Feature. In spite of a name contest that produced over 1,800 options, the film was released in November 1940 with an early working title that had remained a favorite amongst supervisors—Fantasia. A colorful, one-of-a-kind piece.
