ink signed in Hooker’s scrawled hand in the field above his head, no back mark.

"Fighting Joe" Hooker ascended to command the Army of the Potomac in the wake of McClellan’s dismissal and was in turn replaced by Meade following Chancellorsville. Hooker transferred west with the 11th and 12th Corps and fought at Chattanooga in the celebrated if highly exaggerated Battle Above the Clouds. During the opening of the Atlanta campaign, Hooker retained the consolidated 20th Corps, but was passed over to command the Army of Tennessee when Sherman appointed O.O. Howard after McPherson was killed. Hooker promptly requested to be relieved. Thereafter, Hooker held department command and retired from the army in 1868 as a major general.

Descended directly in the family of General Thomas H. Ruger

Condition: Upper left corner of albumen torn away, lower left damaged. Light water stains noted on verso of mount, else G+.
