Mainie Jellett (1897-1944)
COLLECTION OF EPHEMERA COMPRISING HANDWRITTEN NOTES, CORRESPONDENCE AND A NOTICE OF MEETING (1918)
notes (2 folios); postcards(1); notice letter (1)
variously signed, inscribed and dated hand-written
19 by 28cm., 7.5 by 11in.

Handwritten notes by Mainie Jellett on the Contemporary Painters Exhibition October 1939 showing French Painting; Fauves and Cubist Schools. Prominent French artists mentioned as pivotal figures in the French art movement include Cézanne who she describes as having taught painters to, “…see the Lourve with fresh eyes.” Jellett also looks to German philosopher Schopenhauer when interpreting challenging artwork, his advice, “A work of art should be treated like a Prince it must speak to you first”. It is effort from the onlooker that Jellett sees as key to the understanding and appreciating of art.

Also included in this lot is ‘Sir Hugh Lane's French Pictures, Notice of Meeting to Petition The Government for The Return of The Lane Pictures, 1918’, a rare circular letter from George Atkinson RHA, Honorary Secretary of the committee formed to appeal for the return of the Lane pictures, notifying of a public meeting to be held in Dublin on 29 January [1918]. Single page with facsimile autograph of George Atkinson, RHA (1880-1941).

Also included, an illustrated postcard from Jellett to Miss A. Clarke [Sorrento Cottage, Dalkey, Co. Dublin] dated August 1937. Here Jellett makes reference to going to the printers and arranging the catalogue for the Dublin Painters’ Show before coming out to visit Miss Clarke.
