19th Century Travel Box with square plaque on top. This travel box is in a very rich shade of highly figured mahogany and it is brass bound on each corner. It has an interesting secret drawer on the side. The box has recessed handles as you would find on most nautical furniture and this desk box is basically in a campaign style. When you open the box it has the top and bottom lift top desk surfaces. The top desk surfaces have been lined with felt and it is not a great job, it is Ok, but nice tooled leather surfaces would be more fitting to the style of the desk - I suppose that is what they had originally. There is a pen and inkwell compartment on the inside front. The lock is present but of course there is no key. On top of the escutcheon there is an old repair - you should be able to see it in the photographs ? it is about 4? long. It looks as though typically when the key to the box was lost someone had to get into the box and they probably pried it open there and then had it repaired. Other then that it is in fairly good condition, it needs a little bit of TLC, a good polish would do it, and maybe a better repair above the lock would be usefully. It would almost bring the box back to its original state. This box measures 16?l x 6 ¾?h x 10 ¾?w.
