Magnus wood engrave prints (6) of cities & maps. Included is a view of Washington City (D.C.), Norfolk/Portsmouth, & Philadelphia & maps of Newark, Buffalo & Albany.
Charles Magnus (1826-1900) was a lithographer, publisher, mapmaker, bookseller, & stationer working in New York City from 1850-1899. Born in Elberfeld, Germany, he immigrated to America in 1848 & learned the printing business from his older brother.
Magnus' early work includes pictorial letter sheets illustrated with city views & maps. During the Civil War, he produced more than 700 patriotic envelopes, over 300 illustrated song sheets, & cards with pictures of Confederate officers & government officials. He later expanded his work to include prints, board games, reward of merit cards, & advertising & custom printing.
