Magnificent carved ivory tankard in ancient battle scenes showing Hannibal with elephants, attendants, and horsemen in full battle armor as they travelled through the alps. The tankard measures 16” in height by7” across the widest part of the ornate silver plated over brass mounts which are ornamented in high relief in matching battle scenes. The tankard dates to the mid 19th century and is the finest carving imaginable. This particular tankard was in the personal collection of Robert Elz, well known antique arms dealer who collected ivory from the 1950’s through his passing in 1979. The tankard was then obtained by Ronald MacWillie of Lakewood, California, who was also an ivory and high art European arms collector. For a period of 30 years, Robert Elz, Ron MacWillie, and Martin Redding wrestled for ownership of this fine artwork. All threeagreed that the carving on the body portraying the men in armor and elephants was as fine as any they had ever seen. The condition is fine to excellent. There has been a small repair to the grip of the sword
