Finished in a brown salt glaze, this churn measures 16 inches tall and 10 inches wide, with a pair of molded handles on the sides, a matching lid with hole for a plunger handle (not included). The side of the churn bears the inscription "Miss Minnie Ebey/1900". Information supplied by the consignor identifies Minnie Ebey as a resident of Winchester, Illinois and sister of Orville Ebey, one of the last members of the Ebey family in the pottery trade. The Ebey's were pioneers in Illinois pottery, being responsible for discovering a number of sources of quality stone wear clay, in addition to being forerunners in the use of drainage tile grids for converting swampland into usable cropland, a process which also prompted a drop in cases of malaria in America.
