A) Factory Engraved and Gold Inlaid Colt Second Series Woodsman Semi-Automatic Pistol. With exception of the barrel length, these Beautifully factory Class "A" engraved and 24 karat gold inlaid set of Colt Woodsman pistols are a matched pair, engraved by Master Engraver Leonard Francolini. They were returned to the factory in 1979 for factory embellishment by recognized collector Horace Greely IV (now deceased). The pistols feature finely executed floral scroll and punch dot engraving on the top and bottom of the barrel, frame sides and top, slide sides and front strap. The flat side surfaces of the slide have exquisite 24 karat gold inlaid line border. The one line Colt address is marked on the left side of the barrel. The Rampant Colt over "WOODSMAN" on the left side of the frame and "COLT AUTOMATIC / CAL. 22 LONG RIFLE" on the left front of the slide. The serial number is marked on the right side of the frame. Pinned ramped front and adjustable rear target sights, magazine marked "COLT CAL. 22L.R.", The pistols are finished in high polish Colt royal blue which was done at the time of embellishment. Fitted with checkered walnut grips with right hand thumb rest. Complete in an oak Colt Custom case with wine colored velveteen lining, nickel oiler, key and an extra Colt marked magazine for each pistol. This pair of pistols were pictured on the cover of the "Rampant Colt" magazine, September 1991, in an article in "The Man At Arms" and in other publications. The accompanying factory letter verifies serial number 303708S as having blue finish, 22 caliber, 6" barrel and wood grips and that it was shipped as 1 of 2 guns to ZIRMO Co., New York City on June 25, 1976. Both guns in this lot were sent back to Colt on 3-30-79 by Horace Greeley, "A" engraved by Leonard Francolini with 24 karat gold bands on the slides and then shipped back to Horace Greeley on 5/31/79 with the 2 gun case. Leonard Francolini is considered one of the great Master Engravers of firearms and sophisticated collectors actively seek his masterfully done pieces.
