Magnificent Nimschke Exhibition Quality Engraved Ballard Single Shot Rifle with Silver Mounted Stock and Original Shooters Box and Accessories

This is a fantastic, Nimschke engraved single shot rifle with a "Extra Grade" Pacific Ballard action and custom B.B. Loar barrel built by Benjamin B. Loar in circa 1880. Benjamin B. Loar was a Gunsmith, Watchmaker and Jeweler in Granville and Newark, Ohio from 1850 to 1890. The heavy octagon barrel features an adjustable Sharps Spirit level front globe sight, false muzzle, solid iron under rib and fixed iron rear sight. The top flat at the breech end is stamped "B.B. LOAR / GRANDVILLE, O." The front of the action under the forearm is marked with an "0" and the action has the early thick trigger plate. There is a Vernier long range peep sight mounted on the upper tang. The casehardened action is nicely engraved with scroll and floral designs with a punch dot background on the right side and a finely detailed scene of a dog attacking a buck on the left side. The top flat of the action features floral scroll and punch dot engraving. The left side of the action is marked "J.M. MARLIN NEW-HAVEN, CONN BALLARDS PATENT NOV. 5, 1861". Wooden ramrod, double set triggers and mounted with high gloss varnished walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a silver plated crescent buttplate with engraved toe extension and tang. The stock is beautifully decorated with engraved Sterling silver inlays including the silver forend. The patch box door is engraved with a deer in a wooden scene and the attaching hardware is in the eagle shield motif and scroll engraved. The underside of the stock has a decorative silver cap compartment with "B LOAR" marked on the inside of the door. The right rear of the stock has an small inset compass surrounded by floral leaf engraved silver. On the cheekpiece is a hounding dog on point. The remaining inlays are engraved with floral scroll designs and the forearm wedge escutcheons are engraved with simple patterns. The rifle is complete with the original shooters box containing a small powder flask, two empty original boxes (sealed in cellophane) of Marlins Improved Everlasting rifle Shells, 44 cal, 100 grain, for Ballard rifles, six unopened, original boxes of E. Remington & Sons, 44-77 sporting rifle swaged bullets, approximately 28 brass casings, a globe front sight, approximately 25 lead bullets (loose), two partially full cap tins, powder measurer and misc. tools. Also included is a binder with a brief description and numerous photos of this rifle and accessories, and a brief history (1849 to 1896), of the Loar family.

Very fine. The barrel has 60% of the original brown finish with a few small areas of light cleaning. The action retains 85% of the original bright case colors with a smooth silver gray on the balance. The lever has a smooth mottled gray patina, with nearly all of the original dulling silver plating remains on the buttplate. Some of the silver has darkened patina with age. The wood is also very good with 97% original varnish remaining and showing some scattered minor dings and pressure dents. The markings and engraving remain clear. The action is excellent. This is the whole package, a superb custom Ballard, Nimschke engraved single shot rifle, the shooters box and all of the accessories.
