Magnificent Hand-Painted Plaque of Buckskin Charley,<p>porcelain, with "Pouyat Limoges" and "J.P.L. France" on verso Finely executed portrait titled "Buckskin Charles-Sub-Chief of the Utes", with gilt scrollwork border on red band, 16.25" diameter. Likely a painting based on a photograph of this famous Ute, so named for his prowess at supplying meat for soldiers at Ft. Garland, CO. He was with Kit Carson in the Bosque Redondo Navajo campaign of 1862-63, and later served as a Government scout in New Mexico and Colorado. According to an applied typed label on the verso of the plaque, this image shows in about 1902. The label was typed by an acquaintance, who knew him from the Southern Ute Reservation at Navajo Springs.<p>Some wear to gilt at edge, else EXC.
