Estimate: $10000 - 18000
Manufactured from 1872 to 1888, this pistol is one of only six known bearing the anomalous barrel marking of "REMINGTON'S ILION, N.Y. PATd OCT.1.1861 NOV.15. '86"; while the November date is a Rider patent applicable to the Rolling Block, the October date references the Elliot patent governing the "Zig-Zag" revolving pepperbox. This pistol is pictured on page 24 of L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver by Wilson. The pull is identical to the side plates featured on the bottom of the page and even more important is the "LN" signature which is present on the pistol and is identical to the pull. An eight-pointed radiant star is engraved on top of the frame, with punch-dot backed scroll engraving on the sides of the frame and the top and the bottom of the backstrap. The initials "LN" are engraved on the right side of the frame, and a reoccurring motif of punch dots within a semi-circle is present on the frame sides and backstrap. On the front strap is a lacquer covered, white paint marking "KM 641", in the style of the Karl Moldenhauer Collection in white paint. Fitted with checkered high grade walnut furniture, including a special rounded butt pistol grip. This arms has been part of the John Locke Collection (pictured on page 330) and the Karl Moldenhauer Collection, at which time it was featured on page 145 of Landskron's Remington Rolling Block Pistols. In the book Landskron notes that he has only seen 3 Rolling Block pistols fitted with a rounded grip, and only this one with checkering. Additionally, Landskron attributes the "LN" as the signature of Master Engraver Louis David Nimschke himself.
