The Daum glassmaking company, also known as Daum Brothers, was originally established in the city of Nancy, France as the Verrerie Sainte Catherine, in which Jean Daum, a notary and industrialist by trade, was a financier. When the firm hit a nearly fatal slump Daum assumed direct control and brought it back into solvency. Under the tenure of his sons Auguste and Andre it would grow to be a leader in the field of French art glass and the Art Nouveau movement. Measuring 16 inches tall and 5 inches across the base, the exterior is adorned with a scene of a forest in wintertime. Using a combination of techniques associated with Daum, the core material is a light brown glass with yellow streaks which was overlaid with mixed darker brown glass. It was then etched through in three layers. The top unetched layer forming the foreground trees, the second layer the backgrounud trees, and then the deepest etching forming the sky and most distant background to which was added white enameled snow using a ringed effect around the base to further emphasize the illusion of depth created by the etching. The underside of the base is marked with the address/signature "Daum/(Lorraine Cross)/Nancy".
