This magnificent exhibition quality matched pair of consecutively serial numbered pistols were, at least in part, made in Belgium for the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876. These pistols were at one time in the Karl Press collection and feature stepped barrel with five decorative flats on the breech end top, rounded bottom and cannon muzzle. The barrels are very attractively inlaid with gold and silver scroll, dot and simple wire designs and gold inlaid on the top flat E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION NEW-YORK, U.S.A." reading from breech to muzzle. The bottom of the barrel under the forearm is marked with the serial number "2", a crown over "G", Perron and Liege proofs. The top of the chamber has 13 small gold inlaid stars over a gold American eagle with spread wings, "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" in it's mouth, shield on his breast and arrows and an olive branch in it's talons. The sides of the receiver is decorated with gold and silver vine inlays with a simple wire border, the trigger guard and front strap have gold and silver simple wire and dot designs and the backstrap has gold inlaid "PATENT" amid simple vine, wire and dot designs. The back of the breechblock and hammer have gold and silver inlaid simple line and dot designs. The upper left side of the breechblock is marked with a crown and Perron proofmarks. Blade front and breechblock notch rear sights, the barrel is finished blue, the breechblock, hammer and trigger niter blue and the frame casehardened. The pistols are mounted with smooth ivory forearms and grips. Complete in a wooden case with brass corner protectors and initial shield on the lid and purple velvet fitted lining. The case contains an ivory handled screwdriver, iron, casehardened bullet mold, ebony oiler with ivory lid, ebony cleaning rod with slotted nickel tip and ivory handle and 30 original 52 caliber bullets.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 70% of the original blue finish with areas of smooth brownish gray patina. The frame shows 50% faded original case colors with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The trigger and left side of the breechblock and hammer retain most of the original bright niter blue finish with a mottled silver gray on the balance. All of the gold and silver inlays remain, with some fading of the silver. The forearm and grip are also very fine with a few minor age cracks and a pleasant aged patina on most of the forearm and the left side of the grip. The action is excellent. The case is fine with exception of a few cracks, dents, dings and scratches on the exterior. The lining is faded in most areas and there is some moderate wear and some deteriorating of the lining. The bullet mold retains most of the original case colors and the remaining accessories are all very fine.

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 60% of the original blue finish with a smooth grayish brown patina on the balance. The frame retains 50% of the original faded case colors with a smooth dove-gray patina on the balance. The hammer, breech block and trigger show 30% original bright niter blue finish. The grip and forearm are also very fine with three minor age cracks on the butt and an attractive aged patina on most of the forearm and left side of the grip. All of the gold and silver inlay remains with some fading of the silver on the backstrap. The action is excellent.
