Magnificent 1860 Lincoln & Hamlin Jugate Ribbon Magnificent 1860 Lincoln & Hamlin Jugate Ribbon With
Magnificent 1860 Lincoln & Hamlin Jugate Ribbon With Portraits Taken From Mathew Brady Photos. Virtually pristine example of this highly- important ribbon from the renowned Joe Brown Collection. It is, of course, part of the monumental set of single picture and jugate ribbons made for all 1860 candidates. While the Breckinridge & Lane and Douglas & Johnson varieties may be rare, it is the Lincoln & Hamlin everyone puts at the top of their wish lists. Lincoln is a magical name in American political history, as well as in the hierarchy of political campaign collectibles. As if these sought-after "Brady" ribbons were not rare enough already, they are extremely tough in such top condition. A Lincoln & Hamlin of this quality has not appeared on the market for so long as to make price references irrelevant. Single picture Lincolns appear more frequently, and sell in a wide range, depending on condition. Significantly impaired, but collectible examples start out at around $2000; but in top shape, they have sold in the $5000-$7000 range several times in recent years. The jugate version, of course, should be substantially more: it was worth $6000-$7000 when a choice single picture Brady Lincoln could be had for $3000 or less.

This crisp example is all but unimprovable, the only "flaw" being a tiny "98" printed in pencil at the very bottom, probably an inventory number put there by an early collector. It is printed on gorgeous embossed silk, with delicate lacy-scalloped borders. The matching Breckinridge & Lane, on plain silk, sold for $9775, against a $6000-$9000 estimate in our November 2004 auction (#609 Lot 27199). This stunning Lincoln & Hamlin, with its significant Joe Brown Collection provenance, should do better. Measures 2.75" x 6.25".
