Mae West's Personally Owned Set of Rhinestone Jewelry From The Joe Franklin Memory Lane Collection - This set of jewelry was personally owned by actress Mae West. West was an American actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter, comedian, and sex symbol whose entertainment career spanned seven decades. She was well-known for her lighthearted bawdy double entendres and breezy sexual independence, often using a husky contralto voice. She was one of the more controversial movie stars of her day, and encountered many problems, especially censorship. Mae worked on the stage and in vaudeville from the time she was five years old, and by the time she was 14 she was billed as "The Baby Vamp" for her performances on stage. Later Mae began writing her own plays, and later her play "Diamond Lil" became a huge Broadway success, resulting in Mae being offered her first movie role. She became a box-office smash hit, breaking all sorts of attendance records, and her second film which was based on a play which Mae wrote herself was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. By 1936 she became the highest paid woman in the US. This set of rhinestone jewelry includes 2.25" clip-on earrings and a 15.5" necklace. These items were acquired by legendary radio and television host Joe Franklin, who was given the items while backstage at Lou Walters' Latin Quarter, where West was performing. The jewelry will be accompanied by Franklin's original storage envelope, which is notated with handwritten information.
