Madison and Monroe Signed 1812 Ship's Papers. Document Signed on partially printed vellum. Signed "James Madison" as president and "Jas Monroe" as secretary of state, one page, 11" x 15", Washington, D.C., November 20, 1812. British interference with United States maritime commerce provoked in large part America's June 18, 1812 Declaration of War. The language of this document outlines the very mercantile rights that had been routinely abused by an aggressive Royal Navy. By order of the United States, these papers demand that the brig Fox of Philadelphia be allowed "...to pass with her company Passengers Goods and Merchandise without any hinderance seisure or molestation...". Illustrated with two sailing vignettes and affixed with an embossed paper presidential seal. The top edge is scalloped as made. An opportunity to acquire two presidential signatures within an important historical context. Smoothed folds, light soiling, else fine condition.
