This is an original Madeline Tafoya (1912-2002) black on black Santa Clara pottery friendship basket. Madeline Naranjo Tafoya was the first cousin of the well known Santa Clara potter, Margaret Tafoya. Madaline was taught by her grandmother and Margaret from an early age. In her lifetime, she won many awards from the Santa Fe Indian Market as well as the prestigious Governor's Award. The piece shows a wonderful, deeply carved design with a twisted basket handle. The bottom of the piece is signed "Madeline Tafoya". This signature was used from 1940-1960. The black on black pottery basket is in very good condition. It measures 4.75" x 5.25" and is 7" tall.
