This vase is sturdy and decorative! Made of an embossed hard substance--either wood or metal--it is in excellent condition. I estimate it to be 1930s vintage.

The vase is in a baluster shape and could well have been manufactured for use as a lamp base.

The vase generally has a pebbled texture. Around the base of this vase are four (4) "shields" with flowers and birds. The flowers are painted blue or pink with an orange center. The birds descend diagonally from above or ascend diagonally from below and blend into the flowers almost hidden. The birds are painted with green wings. The shields are outlined in gold paint which shows some wear. Above the shields are separate round flower cartouches in the blue or pink paint with the orange centers.

The vase is 10 /2 inches tall and is nearly 4 inches across the top. It measures 1 1/2 inches from the top to the neck. The baluster shape changes the width of the vase as it progresses downward. The widest point is at the top at 5 1/2 inches, which then becomes 4 1/2 inches, and then 3 1/2 inches. The vase then has a 1/4-inch foot. There is no maker's mark but the words "MADE IN JAPAN" incised into the base.

The overall look of the vase is very stable and symmetrical.
