<B>Mad #5 with Bill Gaines Autograph (EC, 1953) Condition: FN-.</B></I> The autograph ""Melvin Gaines!"" graces the first issue of this one, and Melvin is of course publisher Bill Gaines (if you don't get the Melvin joke, you have a lot of <B>Mad</B></I> reading to catch up on!). And this is the ultimate issue to have signed by him, because it's the one with the tongue-in-cheek Gaines biography that ""revealed"" that he was a communist, thief, reform school grad, seller of Tijuana bibles, dope dealer, and brothel owner... among other things! And that in turn is why this is the most difficult issue to find -- some distributors didn't realize that the bio was all in jest, and this issue was yanked from many newsstands. Bill Elder drew the issue's cover, and inside is art by Elder, Wally Wood, Jack Davis, and John Severin. Interior page quality is cream to off-white.
