Mackay,ID - Custer County - 1906 - Mackay Photograph :
Photograph of a man climbing a pole amid a crowd of well-dressed onlookers. Measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/2", mounted on a black matte measuring 9" x 7" with a beige border and ornate markings around border. Contrast is good while focus is fair to good. One noticeable spot near center top of image, otherwise very fine. The matte shows wear around each corner and edge, otherwise it is also very fine. Caption on reverse reads: "Climbing greasy pole, Mackay, Idaho, July 4th, 1906." Location unverified, no photographer listed. The young man climbing the pole appears to be reaching the top, with townsfolk keenly watching. Sign in background for "Shoes, Geo L. Morgan" can be read easily. Certainly one way to celebrate the 4th of July! Mackay's Mine Hill is a significant area of the Alder Creek Mining District. Ore discovered in 1879, full production started in 1884, with ore mined into the 1980s. Through the years nearly a million tons of ore have been removed, with 42,000 oz. of gold, 2,000,000 oz. of silver, 62,000,000 lbs. of copper, 15,000,000 lbs. of lead, and 5,000,000 lbs. of zinc mined [mackayidaho.com/mackay].
