Macedon, Akanthos. Circa 470-450 B.C.
Macedon, Akanthos. Circa 470-450 B.C.<p> AR tetradrachm. Lion right attacking bull left; in exergue, tunny/Ethnic in shallow incuse square around quadripartite with granulated surfaces. 16.71 g (Attic standard). Desneux ("Les tétradrachmes d'Akanthos") 97 (same reverse die). EF45 ICG. Herodotos, the father of written history, was alive when this coin was struck. He tells us that when Xerxes, King of Persia from c. 486-465 B.C. (also at about the time this coin was minted), was marching from Akanthos to Therma, many lions and wild bulls roamed throughout this area. This vigorous early coin type is one of considerable importance for advanced Greek coin collections, as the later issues, minted on the lighter Phoenician standard, are less energetic in style. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M.
