John Murray, 1850FIRST EDITION, pages xii, 543, (1, blank), 16(adverts) : ix, (1, blank), 681, (1), 2 vols, 8vo, original blindstamped cloth, uncut, by Remnants and Edmonds, with their ticket :with a small oval stamp on front fleaf and on first title-page, the inside hinges cracked but the bindings sound and very strong and still a very good copy. Macfarlane (1799–1858), prolific Scottish author, historian and traveller, lived and travelled extensively in Italy over a period of eleven years, later spent sixteen months in Constantinople and the Turkish provinces, returned to England in 1829 and was for many years a valuable member of Charles Knight’s staff. On the other hand he “was imbued with rampant racial prejudices against Armenians, Jews, and (to a lesser degree) Turks, which were only moderated by his obvious susceptibility to all varieties of Eastern women.” – ODNB.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: [DUNKIN ( Robert )].
