MURROW, EDWARD R.
397. EDWARD R. MURROW (1908 - 1965) American television journalist, a pioneer in his field remembered for his work as CBS's war correspondent and his attack on Sen. Joseph McCarthy's investigation into American Communists, which ultimately led to the end of the senator's career. A fine archive of sixteen T.L.S.'s "Ed" spanning over 25 years of correspondence between Murrow and his friend and business associate Ken Holland, written from New York, Washington, and London, on letterheads from the U.S. Information Agency, CBS New York, and CBS London, and dating from Oct. 22, 1935 to Aug. 27, 1964. The content varies, but almost universally concerns his profession and pressures on his time, excerpted in very small part: "...Sorry this letter is so brief, but we are under considerable pressure in connection with the current controversy over the Supreme Court...I think we had best postpone further consideration of the C.C.C. broadcast, for reasons which I will explain...My apologies for failing to reply in time to your letter of June 22. It arrived during my last week on the air and I literally had no time to deal with correspondence...This is a wholly ridiculous state of affairs but your time in government will, I am sure, make you appreciate the difficulty involved in this kind of...operation...To quote the greatest platitude in the last political campaign [1949]...'What we need is a firm hand at the tiller'. We will also try to arrange for a firm hand with the jigger when you get back...Our friend Mary Brennan has misquoted me. I never said that Americans should refrain from writing their friends in England. God forbid! She must be listening to somebody talking in New York since they always seem to know more about Europe than those of us who are over here...". Some staining and wear, but generally very good condition, with three retained carbon copies of letters from Holland.$1,500-2,000
