Sadiq Bey was educated in Cairo and at the prestigious École Poly-technique in Paris. He pursued a military career as an engineer and made his first journey to Medina in 1861. Although Bey is reported to have made photographs there that year, none have survived, thus the present lot is from the earliest known surviving group of photographs of Medina. They were awarded the Gold Medal at the Venice Exposition Photographique in 1881.
