Shah Jahan, Copper Dam, 16.44g, Elichpur Mint, RY X2, Obv: Sahib Qiran Thani arranged in a Tughra, Rev: legend Zarb Fulus Elichpur. Probably unpublished, very fine+, extremely rare.

Although the mint at Elichpur was active for silver in the reign of Akbar, no copper coins of the early Mughal rulers were known as its issues. Towards the end of the reign of Aurangzeb, copper coins began to be struck at Elichpur and for the entire 18th century the mint was actively producing coppers weighing c.18-20 gm.

This coin puts the inception of copper coinage at Elichpur back by at least 50 years. Although ‘2’ is clearly visible on the reverse, it is more likely that it is only the unit figure and the RY is most likely to be ‘32’, which is the time when Aurangzeb, as the viceroy of Deccan, was active in the area, pursuing campaigns against the Adilshahi and the Qutbshahi Sultans.
