title Custer's Battle-Field (June 25th 1876) Surveyed and drawn under the personal supervision of Lieut. Edward Maguire, Corps of Engineers U.S.A. by Sergeant Charles Becker CO. "D" Battalion of Engineers. Framed, matted and glazed, 14.75" x 16.5" visible. Based on surveys drawn just a few days after the battle, this map accompanied Maguire's account of his arrival at the scene in the "Annual Report of the Chief of Engineers to the Secretary of War for the Year 1876." These maps are usually found separated from Maguire's report.

The key on the map indicates the location of the bodies as Maguire marked them, including all three of the Custers (George, Tom, Boston - a civilian forger with the 7th), Henry Reed (Custer's nephew and civilian herder), Captains Myles Keogh and George Yates, and Lieuts. Crittenden (20th Inf.), Calhoun, Reily, Smith and Cooke (all 7th Cav). Maguire tried to map the battle as he saw it, and includes Reno's skirmish line with markings where Lieuts. McIntosh and Hodgson were killed, and the line that apparently represents Custer's line of march and battle on "Last Stand" Hill, with letters presumably referring to descriptions in Maguire's account, not included in this lot.

This is the classic, and earliest, map of the battle.

Condition: Several holes, a couple affecting text, particularly one in "Hodgson". Not removed from frame for examination. Overall still an attractive copy.
