Lot of 4. This company was incorporated originally under the laws of Utah Territory, later under the laws of Montana Territory, and finally under the laws of Washington (1905). All three incarnations of the company had the same president: W. A. Clark. William Andrews Clark was born in Pennsylvania and known for his stamp mill and smelter in Butte. These were the first in the Butte area. Clark successfully made money as a merchant in Montana where he had relocated in 1863 after spending time working the Colorado gold mines. All three certificates are cancelled either through holes punched or a stamp. 1) Certificate no. 553 for 40 shares issued to Geo. W. Parker and signed by Clark and Gro. G. Prescott, Sept. 21, 1881. Black decorated border and black text with vignette at top center of 3 underground miners and 1 vignette at bottom center of a miner with railroad in backgroud. Datelined New York and printed by the American Bank Note Company. 2) Certificate no. A161 for 100 shares and issued to John A. Groesbeck and signed by Clark and Gro. F. Prescott, Jan. 14, 1882. Green decorative border with green text and green vignettes, 1 at top center of underground miners and 1 vignette at bottom center of a miner with railroad in backgroud. Datelined New York and printed by the American Bank Note Company. Datelined New York 3) Certificate no. A1707 for 100 shares issued to R. H. Weems and signed by Clark and John T. Hanna, Jan. 18, 1894. Blue decorative border and text with blue vignettes, 1 at top center of underground miners and 1 vignette at bottom center of a miner with railroad in backgroud. Datelined New York and printed by the American Bank Note Company. Dateline New York. 4) Certificate no. 105 for 100 shares issued to H. L. Shippy and signed by Clark and Will Bickford, May 25, 1905.
