MORRIS [William]
ALs of 1 page from William Morris, from 26 Queen Square, Bloomsbury, London, dated 29 March 1877 to a Mr Freeman enclosing a cheque for £5 towards a collection being made by Dr Sandwith "for the family of the fighting priest in Bosnia."
Note: Humphry Sandwith (1822-1881) was an army physician who spent much of his life involved in military campaigns on the continent. By the 1870s, he had become increasingly interested in Balkan political developments, and when Serbia declared war on Turkey in 1876, he went to Belgrade where he devoted himself to the wounded and refugees. He wrote letters to the English press on behalf of the Serbian cause, and on his return to England in 1877, lectured and spoke on behalf of the Serbian refugees, raising some £7,000 on their behalf.
