(1734 - 1806) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, financier and politician. Morris was instrumental in the financing of Washington's armies, and was later financially ruined through his speculation in western lands. Fine and desperate content A.L.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., [Philadelphia], May 2, 1798 and marked "No. 1". Writing from debtor's prison, to John Nicholson who adds a short unsigned endorsement on verso, Morris writes in full: "Your No. 6 of the 39th April tells me that you were still without the Papers from Messrs. Neklin [?] & Grifith. I hope you have got them now for Mr. Thronton begins to Goad with notes to be dispatched. Chr. Young is not there. I hope that the exertions of D. Allison & myself will hope to keep him away. You had best write to Mr. Granch you owe him nothing - which I cannot say is the case with your obedt. Servant Robt. Morris." WILLIAM THORNTON (1759 - 1828) was one of the commissioners of the City of Washington to prepare the city for the arrival of Congress from Philadelphia and one of the principal architects of the U.S. Capitol. Morris borrowed heavily on land he owned in Washington D.C. in order to purchase western lands. Heavy chipping at margins, resulting in the loss of a few words at the extreme top right, light soiling and creases, overall very good condition.
