a Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States medal No. 1412 belonging to Captain Benjamin F. Rittenhouse, Battery D., 5th US Artillery of Little Round Top fame together with an original copy of his WAR PAPER 3, "The Battle of Gettysburg as seen from Little Round Top" delivered by Rittenhouse at a meeting of the District of Columbia Commandery on May 5, 1887.

In the swirling drama of July 2nd, Benjamin Rittenhouse (1839-1915) took command of the six 10 lb. Parrott’s of Battery D. following the death of Lieutenant Charles E. Hazlett on Little Round Top. As the guns were being manhandled into a precarious position at the rocky summit and serviced, General Weed was struck by sharpshooter’s bullet. Standing nearby, Rittenhouse cradled the dying brigadier who had whispered to see Hazlett. Hazlett arrived directly and kneeling beside the general was promptly shot dead, slumping over the body of his longtime friend.

Little Round Top remains a prolific subject with Glenn W. LaFantasie’s Twilight at Little Round Top (2005) and Bradley M. Gottfreid’s The Artillery of Gettysburg (2008) joining the recent bibliography. Rittenhouse remained in command of Battery D. for the rest of the war and was brevetted captain in August 1864 and Major in March 1865. He stayed in the army until retiring in October 1874.

Founded in 1865, the prestigious red-white-blue enameled MOLLUS medal is often the only 19th century award displayed by veterans until the issue of the later Civil War campaign medal in 1905. Captain Rittenhouse is shown wearing this very medal in a published post-war portrait taken in 1872. Note the edges are folded under at an angle instead of being square.

Engraved Insignia No. 1412 is confirmed as belonging to Benjamin F. Rittenhouse on p. 338 of Union Blue: The History of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.

Condition: MOLLUS Medal shows some loss of enamel in red circle with soiled silk ribbon, G+. Bound MOLLUS pamphlet in orange-brown paper boards G., complete showing wear and soiling with front board missing upper left and lower right corners.
