Lot of two items. 1) A Union Express Co's Merchandise Express Via Railroads West & South-West receipt. The addresses of the New-York and Boston offices are listed at the top left, just below a small railroad vignette. A vignette of a shipping vessel occupies the same area on the top right. Datelined New York, Sept. 25, 1851. The items, 55 "sheets copper," were sent to St. Louis at a tariff of $1.50 cts. per 100 lbs. It was signed for by J. (illegible), Agent for the Union Express Co. 2) A letter form the National Mail and Transporting Co. The company name is written inside an ornate border at the top. At the center top is a round vignette showing a U.S. Mail stagecoach pulled by four horses. Names listed on the masthead are: President (upper left corner), Vice-President (upper right corner), Gen'l Manager (lower left), and Secretary (lower right). Datelined St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1, 1888, it was addressed to the Union Pacific R.R. Gen'l Manager, and written by Daniel Murphy (Secretary). It concerns the publication of 10,000 copies of a paper for "gratuitous distribution." It was to be "placed in the hands of 12000 different persons.
